For Xena’s entire life, she has freaked out during thunder and lightning storms, as well as during the noise of fireworks. She is a 12-year-old Kai Ken dog- a loyal family member, and I hate to see her in distress. We’ve used CDB oils on these occasions in the past, depending on the length and severity of the storm or the fireworks, but they do take time to digest and it often can take 20-40 minutes until she gets drowsy and falls asleep.
Some of the behaviors Xena displays while distressed are pacing, panting, trying to get under the bed, trying to get into the bathtub, jumping on to the bed then immediately off again, and going from room to room. Normally a well-behaved dog, telling her to sit or lie down under these circumstances falls upon deaf ears.
Last week during an explosive thunder and lightning storm, Xena was completely frantic. Jimmie decided to try an experiment, based on his studies about tapping (E.F.T.) by proxy.
E.F.T. or Emotional Freedom Technique is a method of tapping meridian points in different areas of the body, while thinking about an issue- be it trauma, abandonment, fear, P.T.S.D., anger, or even physical pain. As energy flows through these meridians, tapping can reduce stress, negative emotions, and pain, restoring balance. And apparently you can tap by proxy whenever someone cannot get E.F.T. either by being facilitated or doing it on themselves, or cannot have the tapping done by someone else to them, like babies separated in an incubator, for example. Tapping, by the way, can also be done over the phone!! In the case of an animal- you could physically tap on various meridian points of the animal, or you could tap on yourself by proxy, on the animal’s behalf.
Surrogate E.F.T. works because fundamentally we are all energetically connected. The surrogate can set his intentions on whoever he wishes to receive the benefit of his tapping (in this case, Xena) and begin the sequences, starting with something like “This tapping is for Xena… even though the storm is loud and scary, I deeply and completely accept myself”, all the while staying in tune with Xena’s emotions.
At the height of the storm, Jimmie sat down at the dinning room table, and began tapping by proxy for Xena, whose stress level was at a 10. Within minutes- truly minutes- the dog curled up in a ball behind Jimmie’s chair and went to sleep. I just love when animals prove a concept because when it comes to healing animals, there are no placebos!!
